Turning Steel into Sound: Inside the Newberry Tanks x Stax Academy Experience
This year, Newberry Tanks was proud to partner with the Stax Music Academy to support an innovative, hands-on sound design experience for students—bringing creativity beyond the classroom and into a real-world industrial environment.
Newberry Tanks welcomed Stax students to its West Memphis facility, providing hands-on access to an active industrial environment for their project. The Newberry team guided students in capturing original audio samples on-site, helping them record distinctive steel and industrial sounds that the students later transformed into immersive audio environments and music at Stax’s recording studio.
The experience offered more than technical training. Students collaborated, experimented, and engaged directly with the fundamentals of sound design—learning how texture, tone, and environment influence storytelling across music, media, and branding. In the process, they were immersed in the deeper story of Newberry Tanks’ creative heritage; a place built on craftsmanship and pride of work. Legends like B.B. King and “Bukka” White began their journeys at Newberry Tanks. A reminder that the same hands-on dedication and raw creativity that shape steel today, once helped shape the sound of the blues.
The project will conclude with a final reveal, where students present their completed sound designs and receive expert feedback on their work. It’s a powerful example of how creative education and industry partnerships can come together to inspire the next generation of makers, designers, and storytellers.
