Aboveground Generator Base & Sub-Base Fuel Tanks

Compliance Made Simple with Newberry

Compliance made simple. Newberry’s generator base tanks, GEN-TANKS, are built to Steel Tank Institute (STI/SPFA) specifications, which means production is subject to independent quality-control inspections with unannounced plant visits. The tank does two jobs at once: it forms the structural base the generator mounts to, and it stores the diesel fuel that keeps the generator running. With a century-long track record and some of the fastest lead times in the U.S., Newberry ships the size you need when you need it.

How a Gen-Tank works

A generator base tank is an aboveground steel tank engineered to carry the weight of a standby or emergency generator on top of it while storing the generator’s fuel supply inside. The rectangular, low-profile design puts the fuel directly beneath the equipment it serves, saving footprint and simplifying the fuel run. Structural support elements inside or around the tank carry the generator’s load down to the foundation, so the tank has to satisfy both fuel-storage and load-bearing requirements at the same time.

GEN-TANK

Provides sturdy support for your backup or emergency power generator. The rectangular low profile of the GEN-TANK design serves as the structural support for the generator mounting, while providing storage for a complete supply of generator diesel fuel.Meet UL-142 label for Aboveground Storage of Flammable and Combustible Liquids

Features:

Every Gen-Tank is built and listed to UL-142, the standard for aboveground storage of flammable and combustible liquids. Available in single-wall and double-wall construction, with double-wall tanks providing a secondary containment tank around the primary so the interstitial (annular) space can be monitored for leaks.

  • Listed by UL as a Special Purpose Tank
  • Interstitial space can be monitored for leak detection
  • Impermeable to all petroleum products and vapors
  • Stores diesel fuel for emergency and backup generators
  • Primary and secondary tank can be tightness tested onsite
  • Steel and welds conform to UL-142 and STI/SPFA structural requirements; carbon steel meets ASTM A36 / A569 / A635 or the specified carbon-equivalency limit
  • Independent STI/SPFA quality-control inspectors make unannounced plant visits; non-conforming tanks are corrected and re-inspected before shipment

Fuel and water management

Because both fuel storage and the lead-free, low-sulfur nature of modern diesel make tanks more prone to water accumulation and microbial growth, Newberry tanks support the fittings needed for tank gauging, leak monitoring, and water removal so owners can inspect and maintain the system over its life.

UL-142 Applications

Gen-Tanks support backup and emergency power wherever an outage is not an option: data centers, hospitals and healthcare, telecom and cell sites, commercial and industrial facilities, water and wastewater plants, and public infrastructure. Any site running a stationary diesel generator for standby power is a fit.

FAQ

A generator base tank, also called a sub-base tank, is an aboveground steel fuel tank designed to sit directly under a standby or emergency generator. It serves as the structural base the generator mounts to while storing the diesel fuel that powers it, combining fuel storage and equipment support in one low-profile unit.

The terms are used interchangeably in the industry. Both describe a rectangular aboveground tank that mounts beneath a generator and carries its weight while holding its fuel. Newberry’s GEN-TANKS are built to STI/SPFA specifications in single-wall and double-wall configurations.

Both are available. Single-wall tanks provide primary containment; double-wall tanks add a secondary containment tank around the primary, creating an interstitial space that can be continuously monitored for leaks. Double-wall is typically specified where secondary containment is required by code.

Gen-Tanks are built and listed to UL-142 for aboveground storage of flammable and combustible liquids and fabricated to STI/SPFA specifications under an independent quality-control inspection program. Fire-tested (Flameshield / SwRI 97-04) and protected (Fireguard / UL-2085) configurations are available where required.

Before finishing, each tank is air-tested to confirm it does not leak: single-wall tanks and the primary of double-wall tanks are tested first, then the annular space of double-wall tanks is pressurized from the primary. Welds are checked with seam-test solution for bubbles. Newberry’s primary and secondary tanks can also be tightness tested onsite.
