UL-142 Standard Tanks
UL-142 is the baseline standard for aboveground storage of flammable and combustible liquids. Every Newberry UL-142 tank is all-steel construction, available in single wall or double wall, and ships standard with one coat of gray primer. Double wall provides secondary containment without a separate dike.
Bracket & Saddle UL-142 Tanks
The core aboveground line. Bracket tanks (150 to 2,000 gallons) sit on leg brackets; saddle tanks (3,000 to 20,000 gallons) sit on saddles for larger bulk storage. Commonly used for petroleum fuel and lubricant oil storage. Sizes up to 30,000 gallons in single wall vertical construction are available on request.

Skid Tanks
Heavy-duty aboveground storage on skid runners, 150 to 20,000 gallons. Double wall skid tanks are convenient where secondary containment is required. Commonly used for fuel and lubricant oil storage. Optional colors and coatings available.
Skid tanks are built in two mounting configurations. Tanks from 150 to 2,000 gallons use runner skids with forklift pockets, so the tank can be lifted and repositioned on site with equipment you already have. Tanks from 3,000 to 20,000 gallons use I-beam skids, which carry the greater weight but do not include forklift pockets and require rigging to place.

Fire-Rated and Fire-Protected Tanks
When code requires fire protection, the standard determines the tank. Fireguard is a UL-2085 insulated, fire-protected tank. Flameshield is a 2-hour fire-tested tight-wrap double wall tank. Both go beyond what UL-142 alone provides. Confirm which standard your local authority having jurisdiction requires before ordering.
Fireguard UL-2085 Tanks
Thermally insulated, double wall, fire-protected aboveground tanks from 300 to 20,000 gallons. Conform to UL-2085 for insulated secondary containment aboveground tanks, built to UL-142 and NFPA 30 and 30A codes, meet IFC and CARB Standing Loss Control air emissions requirements, and comply with STI Standard F941. Available in rectangular and vertical construction. Options include internal compartment bulkheads, emergency vents, remote overfill, gauges, pumps, pump platforms, canopies, spill containment, ladders, seismic support designs, and turnkey assembly and installation.

Rectangular, Roth, and Poly Tanks
Not every aboveground application calls for a cylindrical steel tank. Newberry also builds rectangular tanks for lubricant storage and dispensing in shops, service bays, and warehouse footprints; Roth double wall tanks certified to UL SU2258 from 110 to 400 gallons; and stackable poly tanks and gravity feed systems from 32 to 330 gallons, which store bulk fluids vertically to free up floor space in quick lube shops, dealerships, fleet maintenance facilities, and manufacturing plants.
Choosing a Standard
Most aboveground buying decisions come down to what your local authority having jurisdiction requires. Confirm the requirement with them first. The table below is a general guide to how Newberry lines map to common requirements; it is not a substitute for the AHJ’s determination, and local code takes precedence in every case.
| If you need... | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline aboveground storage | Any UL-142 tank, single wall | Meets the standard, lowest cost |
| Secondary containment for SPCC | Double wall UL-142, F921, or a containment dike | 110% containment without a separate basin |
| A 2-hour fire rating | Flameshield | Tight-wrap double wall, fire-tested |
| Fire protection plus insulation | Fireguard UL-2085 | Insulated, IFC and CARB emissions compliant |
| Oil field service | Vertical oil field tank | Vertical orientation saves footprint |
| Containment for a tank you already own | Containment Dike | Retrofits existing single wall tanks |
| Lubricant storage in a shop or bay | Rectangular, Roth, or poly | Fits working footprints; see the lube oil page |
Still deciding between standards? Our breakdown of UL-142 vs UL-2085 vs UL-2080 walks through what each standard covers and when code requires it. To convert a fluid level into gallons, use our tank chart calculator.
Containment Dikes
Secondary containment for new or existing single wall tanks, sized to contain a minimum of 110 percent of tank capacity. A solution for SPCC requirements that also provides visual leak detection. Constructed on sturdy I-beam supports, standard with one coat of gray primer, with optional industrial enamel in gray or white and more color options available.

Turnkey Packages
Turnkey packages ship pre-assembled with the pumps, vents, gauges, and dispensing equipment already installed, which removes the time and expense of fitting a tank out on site. Standard package sizes are available to order directly. Larger tanks and aboveground rectangular setups are more complex and less likely to fall into a standard pattern, so those are quoted to your configuration.

FAQ
What is an aboveground storage tank?
An aboveground storage tank, or AST, is a fuel or oil storage vessel installed at or above grade rather than buried. ASTs are governed primarily by UL-142 for flammable and combustible liquids, with additional standards such as UL-2085 applying where fire protection is required. Newberry manufactures aboveground tanks from 70 gallon fire pump day tanks up to 20,000 gallons in the published tables, with larger sizes available on request.
What is the difference between UL-142 and UL-2085?
UL-142 is the baseline standard for aboveground steel tanks storing flammable and combustible liquids. UL-2085 covers insulated, fire-protected tanks with secondary containment, which is what Fireguard tanks are built to. Which standard applies to your installation is determined by your local authority having jurisdiction, so confirm the requirement with them before you purchase.
What size aboveground fuel tanks are available?
Newberry aboveground tanks run from 70 gallon fire pump day tanks up to 20,000 gallons in the published tables, with sizes up to 30,000 gallons in single wall vertical construction available on request. Farm tanks cover 150 to 2,000 gallons in the published tables with larger sizes available, and skid tanks cover 150 to 20,000 gallons.
Do I need a double wall tank or a containment dike?
Both provide secondary containment for SPCC compliance. A double wall tank has an integral outer shell, which saves footprint and installation labor. A containment dike is an external basin that can be added to a single wall tank you already own, and it allows visual leak detection. Newberry dikes are sized to hold a minimum of 110 percent of tank capacity. Your local authority having jurisdiction determines which is acceptable for your site.
What is a Fireguard tank?
Fireguard is a thermally insulated, double wall, fire-protected aboveground tank conforming to UL-2085. Newberry Fireguard tanks are also built to UL-142 and NFPA 30 and 30A, meet IFC and CARB Standing Loss Control air emissions requirements, and comply with STI Standard F941.
What is the difference between Flameshield and F921?
Flameshield uses a tight-wrap double wall design with 2-hour fire-tested performance and built-in secondary containment. F921 is a double wall steel tank with impermeable secondary containment meeting EPA SPCC requirements but without the fire rating. Both are STI/SPFA certified and eligible for an extended warranty.
Can a skid tank be moved with a forklift?
Skid tanks from 150 to 2,000 gallons are built on runner skids with forklift pockets, so an empty tank can be lifted and repositioned with equipment already on site. Tanks from 3,000 to 20,000 gallons are built on I-beam skids, which do not include forklift pockets and require rigging to place.
Are aboveground fuel tanks available for farms?
Yes. Newberry farm fuel tanks are single wall carbon steel tanks from 150 to 2,000 gallons in skid or bracket configuration, for gasoline, diesel, and other farm-use fuels, with larger sizes available up to 20,000 gallons for bulk farm storage. The skid design includes forklift pockets, so an empty tank can be moved with equipment already on the farm rather than a rental crew.
Does Newberry manufacture its own tanks?
Yes. Newberry has manufactured steel tanks for 100 years at facilities in West Memphis, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee. Production of STI-certified tanks is subject to independent quality control inspections.
Can I get an aboveground tank with the pump already installed?
Yes. Turnkey packages ship with pumps, vents, gauges, and dispensing equipment pre-installed, which removes the time and expense of fitting the tank out on site. Standard package sizes can be ordered directly; larger and rectangular configurations are quoted to your setup.
